Parent Workshop:
Year 12, 2021

Mastering Year 12 by Suzanne

This workshop is designed to provide parents with tools and skills to help support their sons or daughters as they navigate Year 12.

Aimed at parents whose sons or daughters are in Year 11 and are about to embark on their final academic program. ‘Mastering Year 12’ will alleviate uncertainty about what lies ahead, helping parents to support their children during what can be a very stressful year. It can be tricky to help children maintain their momentum academically, yet also support them to find balance and experience the joy in what is their final year of school.

This workshop helps to demystify the world of NESA and the HSC by clearly explaining what is meant by internal assessment, external assessment, rankings, ‘directive terms’, UAC and opportunities beyond school. But it also offers practical advice on how to support children socially and emotionally in Year 12.

While we understand and value the need for a Year 12 student to feel they have increased autonomy and independence, there is still a very powerful role for parents to play.

This workshop has two main dimensions:

Firstly, it has been designed to answer any of the queries or concerns parents may still feel about the year ahead. Parents need to walk alongside their child, yet at the same time help them maintain momentum, deal with disappointment, develop academic resilience and, most importantly, embrace and celebrate the joy of their final year.

Secondly, the workshop provides opportunities to revisit key topics around rankings, calculation of the ATAR, the role of NESA and notification of results.

There will also be discussion on the role of parents during these final 12 months.
